Natural
gas is a very valuable and useful fossil fuel, and has been used throughout the
world as an efficient and cost-effective form of renewable energy for hundreds
of years. Natural gas-odorless, tasteless, shapeless and colorless in its
purest form-is a flammable combination of hydrocarbon gases, created largely of
methane. However, because its makeup can differ vastly, natural gas often
contains amounts of propane, butane, ethane and pentane.
In
addition, natural gas is a very safe and harmless substance, and is being
increasingly used as an alternative source of renewable energy. When natural is
burned off, it is clean burning, and while it emits large amounts of energy, it
releases lower doses of possibly unsafe or dangerous byproducts than other
fossil fuels. For example, when it burns, natural gas generates much less
carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than coal. In addition, natural gas is in
itself harmless to the human body.
Although
natural gas is generally considered a safe source of renewable energy, there
are potential risks involved. When natural gas is available in substantial
concentrations, it has the potential to kill by decreasing the amount of oxygen
in the air. Natural gas explosions can also occur when large amounts of the gas
are contained, which can kill and destroy.
Despite
the risks involved, the energy emitted from natural gas is valuable and is used
in many different areas of life and society. For example, natural gas is used
for its efficiency and cost effectiveness to heat people's homes, cool people's
homes through natural gas-powered air conditioning, to cook food and to produce
electricity. Natural can even be used commercially, in various industries and
in the transportation sector. Natural gas is truly an effective and versatile
form of renewable energy.
